David Statham
David Statham was born December 5th, 1971, but don’t let his age fool you. Statham is one of the good old boys, with a smooth voice and a way with an audience that makes him the youngest seasoned professional around. When Statham performs, he takes you back to a bygone era where a show was a show and the singer was an entertainment juggernaut, telling jokes and wooing the audience.
His earliest musical influences were the adult contemporary albums in his parent’s collection. Tom Jones and Paul Anka taught Statham a valuable lesson in melody and presence. “I’m not genre-biased; my 2 favourite live albums are Sinatra at the Sands and Iron Maiden’s Live After Death”, states Statham. “A great show is more then a set list; it’s about connecting with your audience. I don’t want to sing for people; I want to sing to them”.
Statham’s various music influences have impacted his jazz career. Behind his smooth voice and debonair attitude lies a glimpse of something raw, as if he is a rock star masquerading as a jazz singer.
The handsome young singer has been recognized by the jazz industry. Exciting gigs include the Beaches Jazz Festival, the Oshawa Jazz and Blues Festival, Mel Lastman Square’s Sunday Serenades, Toronto’s Palais Royale, on an Eastern Caribbean Cruise, and as part of Jazz FM’s Sound of Jazz series.

The Shuffle Demons
Saxophonists dressed in wacky clothes, a crazy dancing drummer and a killer upright bass player and have them sing songs about Buses, Roaches and Hockey and spend 1/2 their time playing in the audience? The Shuffle Demons, that’s what!!! They were a band that captured the imagination of a generation with their antics and amazing no holds barred playing and stopped traffic on a regular basis. And now they’re back!!
23 years later, the Shuffle Demons return to form with a greatest hits album, a DVD and a whole lot of demonic attitude. So get ready to sway in your seat, jump to your feet and dance to the Demon beat!
But who are these debonair ruffians, these satirical streetniks of stage, screen, and sidewalk… these Cartoon Hepcats with the cracked conviction of 5 Harpo Marxes? How did they start spreading shuffle ecstasy, only known antidote to seriousness in Canadian music? And is it really 23 years since the Demons first took the Spadina Bus??
The legend of the Shuffle Demons is well known to Canadians. Beginning in September 1984 with veteran street sax player Demon Richard Underhill pleasing the pedestrian multitudes at the corner of Yonge and Bloor in Toronto, the Shuffle Demons quickly evolved into an immensely popular street band. Drawing hordes of hipsters to their street gigs with their wild playing and exotic wardrobe, the Demons (Mike Murley, Stich Wynston, Jim Vivian, Dave Parker and Richard Underhill) next took their caustic collection of musical majesties and travesties inside and began pleasing bunches of boppers in Toronto clubs. Inspired by these fashion assassins and their original street hits Spadina Bus, The Shuffle Monster, Out of My House, Roach, and What do you Want?

CATL
Influenced by Mississippi Delta blues musicians Fred McDowell, John Hurt and Son House, catl’s sound is pure juke-joint blues.
Toronto-based catl is joined by Johnny LaRue on drums and since both bring years of punk-influenced rock ‘n’ roll to their music (catl in Pecola; LaRue in No No Zero and Exploders) their blues sound is often described as “blues punk.” Oshawa-based music writer Will McGuirk says catl “play with the Mississippi mud still on the instruments as if they pulled them broken and wet from the birth swamp itself.”
Since the late ’90s, catl began to develop an appreciation for Southern blues, sought out records by McDowell, Charley Patton and the like, and began melding various styles. For the past year, catl has shared his version of the blues in venues across Ontario and as far away as Oaxaca, Mexico.
